In 2019, the prospects for Wrexham FC were bleak. The oldest soccer club in Wales had floundered for 15 years in the National League, the lowest level of British professional football. Wrexham, a city of 45,000 people, was once an industrial and coal mining center, but it had yet to recover from the loss of its primary source of employment when the last of the coal mines closed in the 1980s.
